Exclusive Paint Protection tints the Tesla Model Y L with XPEL PRIME XR PLUS ceramic window tint at both of our studios: Charlotte (4913 Chastain Ave, Suite 32) and Huntersville (13266 Reese Blvd E, Unit 400). We’ve already tinted the Model Y L at each one. We’re an Authorized XPEL Dealer with more than 20 years in the business and nearly 2,000 vehicles protected, and our own installers do every job.

What makes the Model Y L different to tint?

The Model Y L is the six-seat, three-row version of the Model Y. That means more people sitting farther back, and more glass around them. On the Model Y L, the rear door glass, the quarter glass behind the rear doors and the rear window are all a different size from a standard Model Y, so film cut for a regular Model Y won’t fit. Every piece is cut for the Y L’s own glass.

The tinting itself follows the same standard as any Tesla we do: film cut to fit each window, heat-formed on curved glass like the rear window, and installed indoors by our own team.

Why does the third row get so hot?

On a standard five-seat car, most rear passengers sit in one row. In a Model Y L, kids or adults in the third row sit right beside the rear side glass with the rear window behind them. On a North Carolina afternoon in July, that’s where the sun lands. Front passengers can adjust the air and pull down a visor. The people in the back can’t do much about the sun on their side of the car.

That’s why we talk about the second and third rows first with Model Y L owners. If the family complaint is “it’s too hot back here,” the rear glass is where tint makes the biggest difference.

Which XPEL film do we recommend for a Model Y L?

We install two XPEL PRIME ceramic films:

      • XPEL PRIME XR PLUS, XPEL’s highest-performance ceramic film. It’s the one we recommend most for North Carolina summers, especially on a car with a lot of glass like the Model Y L.
      • XPEL PRIME XR, a nano-ceramic film with strong heat rejection and a clean, factory look.

Both are ceramic rather than metallic, so they won’t interfere with GPS, Bluetooth, your phone or the car’s cameras and sensors. XPEL rates PRIME films to block up to 99% of UV rays, which matters for anyone riding in the back for a long drive.

Does a darker tint keep the back rows cooler?

Not by itself. How dark a film is (its VLT, or visible light transmission) affects privacy and appearance. Heat rejection comes from the film’s technology. A legal shade of PRIME XR PLUS can keep the cabin cooler than a darker, lower-grade film. If the goal is a cooler third row, a better film does more than a darker one.

The Model Y L pictured here, done at our Charlotte studio, is a good example. It has XPEL PRIME XR PLUS: 35% on the front doors, a lighter 70% on the rear doors, the quarter glass and the rear window, and 70% on the windshield. The back is lighter than many people expect, and the rear rows still get the heat and UV benefit, because that comes from the film.

What’s legal on a Model Y L in North Carolina?

Since December 1, 2025, North Carolina no longer checks window tint during the annual safety inspection, but the law hasn’t changed. Front side windows still need to let through at least 35% of visible light, and an officer can still measure your tint at a traffic stop. What’s allowed behind the driver can depend on how your vehicle is classified, so we check that on your car before recommending a shade.

The windshield has its own rule. North Carolina allows tint only along the top of the windshield, down to the AS-1 line or 5 inches, whichever is longer, plus an untinted clear film that blocks UV. A light windshield film like the 70% on the car pictured here is chosen for heat and UV, not darkness. We’ll go over the rules with you before you decide whether the windshield is right for your car.

This is general information, not legal advice.

      What doesn’t window tint do?

Tint is about heat, glare and UV. It always goes on the inside of the glass, so it won’t stop rock chips, including on the windshield. If chips are the concern, we install XPEL windshield protection film on the outside of the glass at both studios. For the paint, see our Tesla paint protection film page.

Can I add tint when I order my Model Y L from Tesla?

Both EPP studios are participating installers in Tesla’s at-purchase XPEL tint program, and the program covers the Model Y L. You can add XPEL tint when you order the car and have us install it. You can also book with us directly after delivery.

How long does it take, and what’s the warranty?

Most cars are finished the same day, in 4 to 6 hours, and we recommend dropping the car off. That includes the Model Y L.

XPEL PRIME films carry XPEL’s limited warranty for the life of your vehicle. It’s honored nationwide, and it’s transferable. It covers discoloration, fading, bubbling, peeling, cracking and delamination, and it requires professional installation. XPEL now issues warranties digitally. We register your film with XPEL, and XPEL emails the warranty to you directly. If you sell the car, the remaining coverage passes to the new owner with proof of the original install date.

How should a Model Y L owner decide?

      1. Start with the rear glass if the family rides in the back.
      2. Pick the film for heat, then the shade for looks and privacy.
      3. Keep the front sides at a legal shade.
      4. Book a shop that names the exact XPEL film and does its own installs.

      FAQ

Do you tint the Tesla Model Y L?

Yes, at both our Charlotte and Huntersville studios, using XPEL PRIME ceramic film.

What’s the best tint for keeping the third row cool?

We recommend XPEL PRIME XR PLUS most often. Heat rejection comes from the film, not how dark it is, so you can keep a legal shade and still cool the back rows.

How long does Model Y L tint take?

Same day, in 4 to 6 hours, like most cars. We recommend dropping the car off.

Is the tint warranty from EPP or XPEL?

From XPEL. PRIME films carry XPEL’s limited warranty for the life of your vehicle, honored nationwide and transferable.
